Me personally, I'd always liked the acoustic, but it's starting to grow on me after listening to it on Humbug. I have to say, I love the part where "liar" is echoed after the line "And the photobooth's a liar", and Alison Mosshart's vocals are boss. So, I can't really say which I prefer.

Arctic Monkeys Timeline

Hi guys. Over the past couple of weeks i've put together an Arctic Monkeys Timeline in the form of a youtube playlist.

I wasn't aware that anyone had done this and i thought it would be cool to see everything monkey-related in chronological order.

The timeline includes mostly interviews, TV appearances, and there are some bootlegs videos in their (especially in the beginning as thats all we have!).

It starts in late 2004 and ends in the present day around the 2010 NME awards sort of time.

http://www.youtube.c...54DBF89D3893139

I hope to keep this timeline up to date from now on.

Also, if anyone can suggest some things to be added, or disputes the order please let me know.

Arctic Monkeys: Humbug (Domino) Review

Quote

Arctic Monkeys: Humbug (Domino)

11:14am Tuesday 16th February 2010

By Chris Robson »

It's been nearly five years since the Arctic Monkeys released 'Whatever people say I am, that's what I'm not'. It was met with worldwide critical acclaim and became the fastest selling debut album of all time in the UK, until a recent display of public madness perversely took that accolade away. Susan Boyle? Hang your heads in shame people.

The country took the lads from Sheffield to heart after falling in love with the cheeky monkeys tales of dark, boring towns, shi**y little boozers and girls they were never going to pull.

They were different, giving most of their songs away for free on their MySpace page, snubbing awards ceremonies and even refused to play on certain television programmes that used to be essential for a bands exposure. The Monkeys seem to enjoy and thrive on bucking the trend in favour of something new and interesting. They push it forward. 'Humbug' is their brave attempt at pushing it further.

Changing musical direction can sometimes be a double edged sword, you can't please everybody. It would have been easy to stick with the winning Brit-punk formula that won them so many fans in the first place. Keep the masses happy, but the masses have to realise that Alex Turner isn't a teenager hanging around the streets of Sheffield anymore, and he isn't the type to pretend that he is. He's grown up, moved on.

That isn't to say that it's all over for his song writing inspiration. Turner's witty, cynical and occasionally miserable world view pours from every track. His smirking sense of humour and thoughtful observations make the record what it is. You can take the boy out of Yorkshire, but you can't take Yorkshire out of the boy.

Most of the album was produced by Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, which isn't hard to hear as the sound is a lot darker, more heavy perhaps, with a running theme of western style twanging guitars and spooky organ playing, which could be as much to do with Turner's influences from side project the last shadow puppets as it is with Homme's production.

Stand out tracks include Crying Lightning, Secret Door and the excellent Cornerstone - a tale of walking from to pub to pub mistaking all of the girls for an old flame, encapsulated perfectly in the opening verse: "I though I saw you in the Battleship/but it was only a lookalike/she was nothing but a vision trick/under the warning light/she was close, close enough to be your ghost/but my chances turned to toast/when I asked if I could call her your name."

Humbug is a solid, explorative album that kind of chugs along at a nice speed and is given a more than occasional burst of pace through Turner's lyrics. There are no Mardy Bum's or Riot Van's anymore - things have changed. But this is a step in the right direction. The Arctic Monkeys are innovators, and hopefully always will be.
Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders says their US tour will end this campaign Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders has said the band are not planning on playing UK shows this summer.

Following the release of their third album Humbug last August the Sheffield group headlined the Reading and Leeds festivals but say their forthcoming American tour will bring an end to the current campaign.

Speaking to Radio 1's Zane Lowe, Matt Helders says the shows are likely to be the last.

"I think so, yeah," he admitted. "I think we're doing a quick campaign this time around. We're quite eager to record again."

Arctic Monkeys' only UK show currently announced is an appearance at the Teenage Cancer Trust series at London's Royal Albert Hall on 27 March.

Regarding the sound of the new material they're working on the sticksman added: "It's going to be different again. Not necessarily in the same direction as the last record.

"There are some left-overs from the last record - stuff that we saved because we thought it'd be good enough for another album but didn't fit in with the third album - a bit heavier and a bit more upbeat."
audio sounds too messy to be a real studio version... I guess it's just a very well cleaned out version of the Glasto audio
anyone knows more about this?

Josh Homme writes about AM for Q Magazine

Have no scanner at the minute, so typed up the text..

Quote

British bands sometimes arrive in America with huge expectations attached to them. We saw it a little bit with Oasis. But with the Arctic Monkeys I got it from the very first time I heard I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor. It was cheeky, punky and not very London. I could tell they were not cosmopolitan. They were bored and snotty, but the music and the standard of Alex Turner's writing somehow turned that into something kinda poetic. More importantly, even though it was music very much of its place and time it made sense anywhere.

Laurence Bell, the head of their label, Domino, contacted me about working with them. Preliminary discussions were about anything other than music. Alex called me to ask what he should wear for an evening out with his girlfriend and we took it from there. Even when we talked about music we didn't decide to make an album. The rationale was: we are recording. It will be in the desert. The food will be spicy. Everything else TBC.

Upon their arrival, I was immediately taken by the fact that they didn't moan or perspire. From Sheffield to the desert is a lot to ask your perspiration glands to deal with. The guys just got on with it. Also, I was impressed that given they had experienced huge and sudden fame they didn't have any ego. Believe me, in the desert community you will get found out if you think you are more special than a cactus.

You can never tell how a band is going to respond to having to record their album in a shower. At Rancho de la Luna, that's how it works. It's basically a house with a mixing desk in it so Alex would sing in the kitchen or in the bathroom. The drums might be set up in the hallway or wherever. Jamie Cook's guitar amp was in the shower. They didn't flinch hough. Some bits of the recording we did at the Integratron, which was built by an aircraft engineer, George Van Tassel, in the'50s after he was contacted by aliens from the planet Venus who gave him the blueprint for the structure. The Monkeys are pretty grounded guys from a steel town. I figured they might be thrown by recording in a studio designed by aliens, but it didn't phase them.

In fact I began to think that Alex might be in touch with them in some way, the way he works on his lyrics. If there was a line to hone or edit he'd step outside without paper or a pen, stare at the horizon for a few seconds, then walk right back in and deliver some majestic new couplet. Seeing him conjure these lines from nothing I wonder if he's not at least part extraterrestrial himself.

The first two albums are very fast, laddish and social in their outlook. They are about the streets of the UK. But a lot of Humbug is like a quiet moment between two people. The songs are far more intimate and I reckon that shows an amazing growth and maturity from the last album.

I think that says something important about Alex. Especially in the UK, people want him to be the voice of his generation. That's a heavy mantle for anyone to bear. Who would want to take something like that on? I think he's doing a great job right now. For a guy who's so great with words in song he doesn't say very much in conversation. You never really know what he's thinking and that's a necessary part of his armoury. It's an unreal world the world of the "rock star" and sometimes the less you give to it the better.

If I was going to give advice about what he and the Monkeys do next I'd be a professor in Rock School. And Rock School would teach the wrong things and be staffed by dickheads because the only lesson is: hold on to your love of the art and trust it. The one thing I'd say is I think we'll see more collaborations. Collaborations are the only way to find out what you can really do as a musician: be a scientist. Collect data. Take it back to your band and work on it. Recall who you were. Become who you are.

I think Alex is going to wake up in some strange alleys these next few years and anyone who loves music is going to benefit.

The same issue had an Albums of the Century List. WPSIA was at no. 3. It was nominated by Lars Ulrich from Metallica who said, " I listened to it for six months, five times a day. He's very talented, Alex Turner".
